Marking another revolutionary milestone, in the history of Sri Lankan Percussion Art. Sharing the rhythm of humanity witnessed the incipience of “Thuryaa” the first ever women s’ drums ensemble in Sri Lanka. Seeded within the walls of University of the Visual and Performance Arts, the ensemble was formed with 9 talented under graduate minds. Shaping with the essences of Kandiyan, Low country & Sabaragamu the tri tradition of the Sri Lankan percussion art mixing with offshore percussion music we set our path on a colorful effort to research innovate and create a unique masterpiece.

Thuryaa Women’s Drums Ensemble delivered a vibrant and culturally rich performance at the Indo–Lanka Handicrafts and Cultural Festival 2025, an event organized by the National Crafts Council of Sri Lanka in collaboration with the Swami Vivekananda Cultural Centre, High Commission of India in Colombo.
Set against a backdrop that celebrated the artistic heritage of both nations, the drummers brought the stage to life with energetic rhythms and graceful movement. Their shimmering gold costumes and traditional drums added a striking visual presence, blending Sri Lankan percussion artistry with the spirit of cultural unity.
The performance symbolized the deep-rooted connection between India and Sri Lanka, showcasing the power of music and traditional craft in strengthening bilateral friendship. With synchronized beats and captivating stage presence, Thuryaa added a dynamic, memorable highlight to this year’s festival, honoring craftsmanship, culture, and the shared artistic heritage of the two countries.
The Thuryaa Women’s Drums Ensemble delivered a vibrant and powerful performance at Derana Calin – Eya Pranama, a special ceremony dedicated to honoring and celebrating the remarkable women who inspire Sri Lanka. The event, held against a beautifully designed floral backdrop and warm ceremonial lighting, highlighted grace, strength, and tradition through rhythmic artistry.
Dressed in shimmering gold tops and striking red costumes, the talented drummers brought energy and elegance to the stage, blending traditional beats with modern presentation. Their synchronized rhythms and confident presence added a dynamic cultural essence to the celebration, capturing the spirit of feminine empowerment and artistic excellence.
This performance showcased not only the exceptional skill of these artists but also the cultural richness and creativity of Sri Lankan women, making “Eya Pranama” a truly memorable tribute.
On 4th May 2025, Thuryaa took the stage at the prestigious Passion Vista Glamour & Style Awards, held during the Global Business Leadership Forum – 7th Edition at Waters Edge Hotel, Colombo.As the only all-female traditional percussion ensemble in Sri Lanka, our performance brought the spirit of Sri Lankan rhythm to an international stage, captivating a global audience with a powerful fusion of heritage and innovation.We are proud to have also received the Heritage Beatmakers Award for Cultural Innovation, a recognition of our journey in transforming traditional drumming into a platform for empowerment and cultural dialogue. This unforgettable evening was not just an award ceremony — it was a celebration of rhythm, identity, and women's power in art.
